Tenerife - Cycling Activities

If you manage to avoid the seriously busy and large roads that circle the island to the south then a whole range of possibilities opens up. As most tourists tend to stick to the hotels and beaches the smaller mountain roads tend to be quiet. Two routes that are mountainous yet extremely beautiful are: 1. From Orotrava in the north, up over the pass by Mount El Teide, and down to Los Gigantes. From Orotrava the climb is steady for about 30 kms, through the cloud-hung forests, then finally striking out above the clouds into glorious sunshine. The National Park itself is mainly flat with some ups and downs, as you come out of the park the road heads down steeply downwards. It would therefore be much harder to do this route in reverse. 2. From Los Gigantes westwards to a very pleasant small village called Masca where you can stop and spend some time, there are bars, restaurants and a small pension, and a very pleasant walk through the canyon to the sea, probably about three hours there and back. The road to Masca climbs steadily to the top of the ridge and then descends almost dangerously steeply down to the village. From Masca, carry on up over the ridge that separates the north from the south side of the island, here you can witness an abrupt climate change and then a long downhill sweep to the sea. Then you can follow the road to Orotrava. From the top of the ridge you can walk to Punta de Teno a mountain on the sea edge on the far west of the island. Though it is a whole day walk. There is also a jeep track that heads from the top of his ridge towards Garachico; it is practicable by ATB. One could also cycle the road that follows the ridge north eastwards. Although no cycling offroad is allowed within the boundaries of the national park there are a number of cycleable tracks running through the forest and any track is cycleable as there are no restrictive laws as in England. Please be careful of the environment, as the volcanic rock is very delicate, do not damage the paths unnecessarily and also do keep to the paths. |
