Tenerife - Getting There and Away
|
|
Monarch and Go both run direct scheduled flights to Tenerife, and there are also charter flights from holiday firms. There are in fact two airports, Tenerife Nort and Tenerife Sur. The latter airport is the only one open to international traffic and it is modern and easily accessible from the South Side of the island. It has a very good tourist information service that was open the whole time that we were there, from 8.00 to 8.30 PM, bars, money changers (closed at that time in the evening) and a whole row of car hire booths. Tenerife Nort is open to local flights including those from mainland Spain. It is possible to catch a ferry from Cadiz, so one could take a car or motorbike to the island, the crossing is roughly 36 hours long. There are also ferries to other Canary Islands, the Fred Olsen ferries leave to La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro the three most westerly islands, from St Christian. And from Santa Cruz, the capitol, ferries leave for the other islands. The catamaran to La Gomera the closest island, about 28 knots away, takes 35 minutes. |
