Reading Cycling Club press report, week ending 5 September 2010
English at British Champs, Reading Open 10 result, Wayne wins Wednesday series, Hale helps heroes.
British Time-Trial Championship
Reading CC's Nick English continued his storming season by taking 2nd place in the Masters 'A' category of the British Time-Trial Championship. The event, held in South Wales on Sunday, was won overall by professional cyclists Bradley Wiggins, Team Sky, and Emma Pooley, Cervelo Test Team, who will wear National Champion jerseys in time-trials over the coming year.
English had entered the first of the age-related categories in which he recorded 44:37 for a tough, hilly two-lap course against the winner Stu Dodd's 43:53. English commented: "It was a nice course and the junctions were marshalled so that you didn't have to worry about traffic. There was a hill through the town and there was a decent crowd there. My ride was solid but not spectacular, I got the to top of the climb thinking I'd ridden it quite well and was ready to push on the last 3/4 of a lap but when I looked at my power meter my power output was a little less than I was hoping for. I was a bit disappointed that appearing on the master's podium meant I missed watching the women's race! "
Reading CC Open 10-mile Time Trial
Reading CC's time-trial revelation this year has been Ken Buckley. Buckley is a newcomer to the sport and a talented one; his times have plummeted as the season has continued. On Saturday morning he took an excellent 3rd place in Reading CC's open promotion on the A4 at Aldermaston, shaded for 2nd place by just one second, and only 14 seconds behind the winner.
Organiser Steve Fleming reports: "Conditions were very good, the weather couldn't have been better and the top three positions were separated by only 14 seconds. Lucinda Seymour was fastest lady and Ian Windall was the veteran with the best 'plus' over age standard. Didcot Phoenix CC took the 1st team award. Thank you to all the riders, I hope you enjoyed the event. My special thanks go to the timekeepers, helpers and caterers that contributed their effort to making my first event run smoothly. I hope to see you all again next year."

Circuit Racing
Supervet Wayne Thomas won the Veterans summer series at Hillindgon for the second year running despite being sidelined with injury for the past eight weeks. With five wins and a second place secured earlier in the year he had already built an unassailable points lead in the Wednesday night twelve race series. Thomas commented "With at least another four weeks to go before I am allowed back on the road, the thought of winning this series has kept me motivated. I got off to a flying start missing only one of the first seven races and scoring in the other six races. To win for a second year is very satisfying."
Help for Heroes Charity Bike Ride
Reading's Fred Hale has been riding a four-day, 330-mile event from Land's End to Twickenham rugby stadium. The ride is a fundraiser for the war veterans' charity, Help for Heroes. Hale says: "This event is promoted for charity but the difficulty of the route is more in keeping with a sportive targeted at hard core cyclists. The ride has been well organised by volunteers who have given it a very special and supportive atmosphere. At the time of writing the ride has raised around £90,000, a tremendous effort by all concerned."
