Time Trials
Reading CC Open 50
Adam Topham of High Wycombe CC was a clear winner of the Reading 50-mile
time-trial at Aldermaston on Sunday morning in a time of 1.49:19, almost
three minutes faster than second-placed Tejvan Pettinger. Steve Bale was
Reading's fastest finisher in a time of 1.59:32 for 7th. Organiser Barry
Quick commented: "The event seemed to go well, everyone was
complimentary, especially about the food - well done to Mary Lomas and
Mariella Patterson for that. Adam Topham did an excellent ride in the
conditions and on his spare non-aero wheel, he reckoned he would have
been 3 or 4 minutes faster with the disc wheel!". Quick rode in his own
event but not without incident, flatting a tyre and damaging a wheel
when he hit a pothole. He repaired the damage and was on his way with
only 5 minutes of time lost. Ian Windall of Farnham RC was the rider
with the best 'plus' over his age standard.

BDCA 100
Nick English continues to rewrite Reading CC club records. On Saturday
he lopped 9 minutes off the previous record for the 100 mile distance
held since 1996 by Robin Jackson. English updated the record in the BDCA
100 mile event on a course West of Derby between Etwall and Blythe
Bridge. English reports on another fast ride: "I am aiming for a good
placing in the national Best All Rounder competition so I entered this
traditionally fast 100, the first of the big BBAR counting races. My
wife Liz was there to support me by handing up bottles. I started
steadily and at the 25 mile turn I was a couple of minutes down on the
rider who had started one minute ahead of me. That wasn't part of the
plan so I pushed harder and at the next turn I saw I had closed in on
him. I decided to keep pushing to the 80 mile turn and then 'hang on'
for the last 20 miles which would have a tailwind as I would get more
for my extra effort in the slower headwind sections. At 75 miles I had
severe cramp in one leg then the other so I tried a few seconds
freewheeling but basically kept pedalling through it until it went away.
Because of misremembering the course distances I thought I had 25 miles
to go when in fact it was only 20 so at that point I was not sure of
getting the club record. I managed to stave off the cramp and finished
with a time of 3:43:07. I am not planning another 100 this year, this
one was enough!"

BDCA 100, selected results (66 finishers):

Newbury Magnificat Sportive
Reading CC put in another excellent showing in a major sportive with
several riders featuring high in the results of the Magnificat sportive.
Sponsored riders filled the first three places, with Reading's Nick
Crocker placing 6th.
Ken Buckley: "I paired up with a friend for most of the way and we
worked well together moving from group to group and upping the pace on
the hills. My chain came off and got stuck between my crank and frame in
the first 20 miles costing me a few minutes and then I had a puncture
about 35 miles in. Luckily, as i was fumbling around desperately trying
to get going again a big yellow Mavic support car came to the rescue and
so the puncture maybe only cost me about 5 minutes. At about 100miles my
friend dropped back on a steep hill and I did the last 27 miles solo.
The day had taken its toll and the last 5 miles were complete hell... my
tanks were empty and I could barely stay upright. I was really pleased
to finish and it was great to see all the Reading guys with smiles on
their faces."
Mike Fenwick: "The Magnificat was an enjoyable day with good weather. I
was slow to get going but found some rhythm in the middle of the ride
and worked well with Greg. With ten miles to go the riders we had been
towing were faster up a climb and I was separated from the group and had
to work against the head wind alone. Overall I was very pleased with my
ride. Nick did a fantastic ride to finish 6th. The other Reading riders
also had excellent results and looked the best club on the day."

Magnificat Sportive, 127 miles, selected results (377 finishers):
1. Ben Thomas 06:08:10 gold TORQ Performance
6. Nicholas Crocker 06:34:35 gold
12. Ken Buckley 06:42:48 gold
17. Greg Woodford 06:45:50 gold
27. Mike Fenwick 06:47:45 gold
101. Ben Oakes 07:25:10 silver
232. Ian Macro 08:08:27 silver
