Dave Finch Memorial Series

What is the Dave Finch Memorial Series?
The Dave Finch Memorial Series comprises a selection of time trials on sporting courses. It is a championship that runs from the start of the season to the end and the winner of the series is awarded the Dave Finch Memorial Trophy.

Who was Dave Finch?
Dave Finch was a very popular veteran member of Reading CC. He took a very active part in club life. Surprisingly, he was always a second claim member, keeping his allegiance to his first claim club: Hounslow & District Wheelers.

Dave took part in clubruns, organised training sessions, rode the club time trials and attended the clubroom regularly. His forte was hilly events. For most of his time with the club Dave lived at Whitchurch Hill and worked in Benson - making full use of his daily ride to work. He was employed by the MOD at RAF Benson; managing a graphic design office. Later Dave became manager of the television studios at the army establishment in Beaconsfield. He moved to Burchetts Green when he was promoted and redployed to the Army Education establishment at Beaconsfield. He used to train army personnel in the techniques of TV interviews.

He moved from Whitchurch to Burchett's Green and continued to ride to work on a daily basis It was in September 1982 that Dave was struck behind by a motor vehicle while climbing White Hill (between Loudwater and Holtspur on the A40) and was killed. He was 46 years old. The driver pleaded that he was blinded by the rising sun but, as far as I can remember, was short of essential documents like insurance. In view of his popularity and his ability in hilly time trials a memorial trophy was purchased and dedicated to the series of hilly club time trial events.

What do I have to do to qualify?
On the Time Trials event list you will see certain events that are part of the series. Each ride you do in the series counts towards the championship. There is a plaque to be won for a year. If you win an event, you are awarded 20 points. Second place gets 19 and so on. At the end of the season, your points from your best five rides are added up and the person with the most. Simple!

How many points do I have?
Check the Time Trial results as the season progresses. Points will be allocated and recorded by the Time Trial Secretary.
