Women's cycling

2017 was a great year for the women of Reading Cycling Club. The awards ceremony showed three of our members scooping up awards, Natalie was delighted to receive road racer of the year and sportive of the year awards, Christina scooped up the time trial awards for both 10 and 25 miles, and Cindy's achievement in the multi-day dragon ride event was also celebrated.
In 2018 women's participation and achievements have continued to stack up. More women only club rides, women's bike maintenance session, a women's 2up TT, so many sportive entries, hill climb TTs.. I could go on! There are more women than ever taking part in our mixed weekly club rides and there have been as many women at the Town Hall on a Sunday morning as men. Ladies, we're getting there...!
This year RCC hosted a criterium race at Hillingdon which featured a 4th CAT only women's race. a rare thing in women's racing, and the women responded... The race sold out. Since women's races rarely get the numbers that the men's races do, this was a great achievement and showed that when women are given the right opportunities on their bikes, they thrive!
RCC's cyclo-cross event was a huge success as always. In 2017 and all years previously, the women's race had to share the course with a men's group. Women's cyclo-cross has grown significantly and 2017 surprised us all and the race completely sold out. So this year RCC responded to the demand and gave the women their own slot with the course to themselves. It was a joy to watch such a huge field of women race. Ladies, you did yourselves proud.
With support like this from the club, RCC's female membership is increasing and we hope to see this trend continue. Women are welcome on all club rides but we also host specific women-only club rides. These start from 35 mile relaxed rides with plenty of chatting, up to 60 miles with more of a focus on training. They are advertised on the club Facebook page - see the events section, or see below... New members are always welcome.
Many of our female members just enjoy a social ride with a chat and coffee, and riding in a group is a great way to boost your confidence on the road. Some of our women club members prefer a bit more of a challenge and are regular participants in sportives, audax, time-trials, road and criterium racing and cyclocross.
Our women's club kit includes jerseys, bib-shorts, arm and leg warmers and jackets.
Our women's rep is Marie and she can be reached in the club Facebook group or emailed. Look out for details of our NEXT WOMEN ONLY CLUB RIDE in the club Facebook group. If you're joining us, please bring spare inner tubes, pump, drink, snack and some money for the cafe stop.
