Reading Cycling Club press report, week ending 20 April 2008

It has been another busy week for Reading CC in time-trialling and road racing.
This week the club sent some members on a first-aid course, mindful of the
occasional spills inherent in cycle sport.

Time Trialling
Paul Taylor competed last season to great effect and has started this season in
the same fashion. Although still a Reading CC member he now lives in Hemel
Hempstead. He is already making an impact there. "Last Thursday I rode the local
Hemel Hempstead club's 10 mile time trial. With a strong breeze and a cool 8ºC
it was not ideal TT conditions. That said I was very happy with my time on the
night, posting a 21.55 and finishing first of the 31 riders. Sigma Sport RT
rider Wouter Sybrandy and Ross Clark of Verulam CC completed the top three." He
added, "The course is not very fast, having a slow turn. I also lost some time
waiting for traffic at a roundabout."

Nick English raced over the weekend at the Farnborough and Camberley 25-mile
event at Bentley. He commented, "There was a savage wind so times were generally
slow, but nevertheless my time of 59:15 was disappointing. I'm hoping that the
explanation lies in the cold that I began developing on Sunday. "

Jeremy Laming and Dave Gaida represented the club at the Oxonian CC 25-mile
event near Oxford. Laming placed highly with his time of 1.00:14, while veteran
Dave Gaida recorded 1.15:55. Fastest rider was Nik Gardiner of Johns Bikes in
54:01.

Road and Circuit Racing
Wayne Thomas continued his busy racing schedule at Hillingdon during the week.
"With a huge field and less wind than of late, we rode the fastest race of the
year at an average 26.6mph - we were "coasting" at 30mph in the back straight.
The races are still quite short at this time of the year, however I was well
satisfied to finish in the main bunch."
Peter Graham and Wayne Thomas, plus 60 or so others, took part in a 55 mile
3rd/4th cat race around a picturesque 7 mile circuit in the Hampshire
countryside at Rowlands Castle. The route included a lengthy climb. Graham was
suffering with a cold and after an early foray off the front on the opening lap,
decided to retire early. Thomas persevered in the main group until the 45 mile
mark but eventually retired on the sixth ascent of the climb.

First Aid Course
Twelve members of Reading Cycling Club attended a First Aid for Sport course at
the New Hope Centre on Wednesday night. The course was delivered by a Training
Officer from the South Central Ambulance Training and Consultancy Service. The
areas covered included primary and secondary survey of an unconscious casualty,
the recovery position, Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation, collar bone fractures and
the proper bandaging of what cyclists call 'road rash'. The greater part of
Reading Cycling Club's portion of the generous 'grants to sports clubs' from
Wokingham Borough Council was spent on funding this valuable and potentially
life-saving course.

Clubrun
Three groups depart from the Market Place, Reading, next to the Queen Victoria
statue, on Sunday mornings at 09.00: Social, Medium and Fast.
