Cotswold Edge Sportive and Haute Route Alps and Box Hill sportive

On Sunday 9th October the sun still shone on our sportive riders; Dave Ivory continued his consistent top form, joined by new club man Jon Crompton, Here's Dave's report:

"New club member Jon Crompton and David Ivory rode the end of season Cotswold Edge Sportive on Sunday 9th October. A fine, if a little chilly day was promised, so a last ride in summer kit and dry roads prevailed.

They have both ridden this event before, and it's a great route. The usual three route options of long, medium, and short were available, but they chose the long route. This was 82 miles, with three major climbs totalling over 4000 feet of climbing. The highlight is climbing above the Severn Estuary, with views across to South Wales, although you can't really enjoy them as no sooner you reach the top you start the fast decent. In previous years there was also an option of a fourth major climb, Kilcot Hill, but this wasn't available this year due to poor road surfaces.

They were both keen to better our previous times so we set off their our own target pace, and agreed to meet at the finish. They had enjoyable and successful but uneventful rides coming in better than their targets, and Finished first and second overall, with David averaging 19 mph, and Jon 18.8mph."

In August /September Stuart Baldwin tackled the prestigious 7 day Haute Route Alps. sportive, which includes a mountain time trial. The route started in Nice and finished in Geneva. Next year's is 21st to 27th August

"It was great .... We were very lucky and had perfect weather – the scenery was amazing.
I achieved my objective of a top 100 place and was 69th overall."

I might add that there were 360 finishers, many not getting to the end. And Stuart was placed 28/156 in his age category, a terrific effort.

In addition Dylan Berry rode strongly and struck gold in the Box Hill sportive:

"This past Sunday, i took on the Original Box Hill Sportive.
Did the 100Miler with an elevation gain 2200m.
This sportive included 6 Category 4 climbs . The first Cat 4 climb only coming after 85km into the ride.

We set off at 7:45am, A chilly start it was.
I knew what was coming as one of Ranjits 'Climbing' club rides took place around the Surrey hills earlier in the summer.

It was a fast start however once the climbing started, the small groups split into individual riders.
This is where i started to find some form. Taking on the climbs. Myself and Tom (rider from sportive ) pushed on to the end.
This is also where club riding starts to show you how much one can improve after a year. Always beneficial i feel.

Never the less, well organised ride. Would recommend it.

Final figures according the website.
Total of 168.7km
2131m elevation gain.
Total time 06:05:54min
Ave 28.05kph
Gold category."
