Doug at Anjou

Over the weekend 18th/19th June Doug Aspinall was in Saumur France for an event with a difference - here's his report.

"6th Anjou Vintage velo. The whole town was en fete with many of the bystanders dressed in 1940 costumes. Cyclistes of all ages similarly dressed. On the Saturday the vintage road-bikes and tandems took part in a 128km ride with 28kms off road. not quite the Eroica but fun.Next day, Sunday the rides were 30,40 and 60 kms with all manner of bikes and ages of riders. For both days the total cyclists was 4200.The only disappointment was that there was no Concours of the road bikes especially as many riders like me had spent much money and time bringing these bikes back to life. In the Permanance Village on the riverside there was bike jumbles of every sort.Frames, forks ,chainsets, bells ,saddles ete etc. There were wine, meat stalls and bands a playing. We were in a campsite on the opposite river bank and can confirm the music went on until after midnight. This should be advertised as a great family cycle event with a campsite within walking distance.family"

The website also gives a good flavour of the weekend's activities:
